The "Memory Tree"

Such a beautiful story about the “The Memory Tree” as told by Matthew Bliss, grandson to this great designer !

The Story

My Grandpa, Lawrence “Bud” Stoecker designed his first modern version of the Christmas tree made of concentric rings in 1966. From the tree’s inception in the mid 1960’s, through the 70’s and 80’s, the design was refined. In addition, the tree was decorated differently each year. Some of these changes are documented in photos. They are also documented on paper in painfully detailed notes and codes, patterning the organization of ornaments and decorations used for that particular year, so as not to repeat what had already been done.

-Why did he decide to make a tree rather then purchase a traditional tree each year?

Grandpa was an engineer and spent the majority of his professional life building A-frames in the Rocky Mountains. His A-Frame business is what fed the family, so the triangle shape was one that was near and dear to his heart. So much so that after seeing a proctologist because of a problem, proclaimed, “I’m pooping A-Frames!” They also had little money and this coupled with his engineering brain and desire to create drove him to build things. One year it was a Christmas present for his 1st grandson (a workbench, my older brother Adam was six). Another year it was an ice skating rink in the backyard. His modern Christmas tree was the family favorite.

$50 of each tree sold will go to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) in support of their mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Karen Watkins is an artist and originally from Indiana. Studied illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design and now work as a artist in Colorado. Most of her paintings are acrylic because she prefers to work in layers and likes the fast drying of acrylic paint. Karen work on canvas, wood, and illustration board. All her paintings are colorful, and whimsical in design. They also have a “cute” and sometimes twisted or edgy feel. Many of Karen's pieces have a surreal narrative and favorite subject are animals, women, imaginary creatures, and natural environments.

Mod Livin' opened it's doors in 1947 as Continental Pharmacy and Liquors. The dry goods sold on the pharmacy side ran the gamut of household items that today would be found at a venue like Target or Walgreens. There is also a loft area that served as a hairdressing studio ... several times during Eisenhower's recovery at Fitzimmons, Mamie was kn...own to be escorted into the back door by the Secret Service in order to have her beauty appointments in seclusion. There was also a soda fountain and lunch counter that neighbors remember frequenting. The doctor that constructed the building made a considerable amount of money by purchasing real estate in Montbello; he spared no expense in making Continental the finest in Denver. For example, expensive Terrazo tile was used throughout the 10,000 square foot space. Later, the pharmacy would be sectioned off by about 1/3rd to make room for Guys 'n Dolls - a child's toy and furniture outlet. The building that houses Mod Livin' today was at one time the East Denver Meat Market, a TV rental outlet, and a pool hall. Jill and Erick purchased it in 2000, feeling that it was a rare survivor, and one of the last examples of 'pharmacy architecture' on E. Colfax. We are excited to have you as guests this weekend in association with the 2011 Doors Open Denver event!

Of course this isn't breaking news, but these days more & more people are opting to remodel their current homes versus purchasing and moving into a new house. These photos come courtesy of one of Mod Livin's customers and friends, Pete Titsworth owner of URBeScape. His remodeled gem is nestled in Cherry Hills Heights and according to Pete, "I can't even describe what a mess it was. I think it was built without plans." We suspect you'll agree with us that he did an amazing job. Here are a couple of pictures of the kitchen. (That's Pete's pup, Maxito.)

Artist Bio

The act of making marks has been central to my life since I was a very young child. I am drawn to creating something out of nothing. As an art teacher in a high-poverty school, as a parent of two boys and as a painter, my everyday life is all about making new things happen with little resources. It is my goal to make work that is representative of living a creative life and to share that work on a larger scale.

I begin each watercolor with a simple mark or wash of color. I then move intuitively through the work layering washes and marks created from a brush, stencil or everyday objects like bottle caps and spools of thread. Caps and spools create circles of various sizes. The circle is the first mark that children make to universally represent people, places and things. I use circles as a child would, a universally representational symbol. My paintings are a bold and earthy response to my appreciation for the duality of life, large and small spaces, inner and outer worlds, nature and the city, solitude and relationships, excitement and calm. Through my use of the most basic elements of art, color, line and shape, I am able to create a balanced and storied environment on each piece of paper in which the viewer can find connections to the contradictory nature of life.

In my most recent body of work, I completed 100 paintings in 100 days. Each painting is an 8” x 8” work painted start to finish in one day. The classic exercise allowed me to bring painting into my everyday life. My three year old son made art alongside me almost every day. Making art has become central to our lives and we continue to express ourselves good, bad, and ordinary each day.

His last work was as project architect for Spire, the 41 story condominium in downtown Denver. Like architecture, furniture has a form, structure, and function that must come together and compliment each other, but it's something that you interact with in a much more intimate way. Will Bussard and his wife, Mary Helen, moved to Denver from their Texas home in 2005. The inspiration behind Will’s handcrafted jewelry was a Valentine’s Day gift he made for Mary Helen; needless to say she loved it and lucky for us Will had enough time on his hands to develop his designs. Atomic Jellyfish Furniture Design

Terry Tomsha has been building furniture and other useful items (and sometimes not so useful) since the age of 10 and hasn't really stopped. Atomic Jellyfish Furniture Design was formed in 2009 so that Terry could follow his passion . . . designing and creating. His primary inspiration comes from the Atomic Age. The space race, the advent of new materials, pushing our limits to go above and beyond what we thought was possible! In choosing his working materials, Terry usually starts with wood, but as the process evolves, other materials will find their way into a piece, i.e. metal, glass, stone, and found objects. Like many creative endeavors Matt began drawing as a feeble, last ditch effort to impress a girl that had already completely lost interest. It didn’t work, but four years later he is still at it, while he didn’t get the girl he did get a hobby. Matt started drawing on grocery lists and notebook paper because it was around, and because art stores are expensive and usually closed in the evenings after work when he usually draws. As Matt’s scribbles got more detailed he needed more room, and began gluing multiple pages together. This allowed the images to start small and grow organically, and made the final overall shape of the pieces a part of the image as well. This is the first art show Matt has participated in, while he is excited about the prospect other people viewing and hopefully enjoying his scribbles, it is still first and foremost an activity that Matt uses to relive boredom and enhance the enjoyment of listening to music and consuming beer.

Jackson Street Furniture is the culmination of many years of designing and building furniture. Trained as an architect and working on large scale projects for many years, I have craved working on design at an intimate, human scale. So I turned to furniture. We all interact more intimately with furniture than buildings, and I have always been drawn to this relationship. Like architecture, it has a form, structure, and function that must work together and complement each other, but it's something that you see, feel, and touch almost your entire day. I have constantly been frustrated by the relative lack of well designed, innovative furniture at prices that is affordable to a wide range of people. Good design and household budgets should not be mutually exclusive. So Jackson Street's collection attempts to bring the two in line with one another - well designed fun furniture that doesn't require a second mortgage to purchase and enjoy.

Certainly you can get cheaper furniture at your local big-box retailer, but it's most likely made overseas with cheap materials by the thousands, and is primarily designed to appeal to the widest audience possible. Jackson Street Furniture crafts all its pieces in small quantities in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains and thin air of Denver, Colorado. Our design doesn't appeal to everyone, but you're not everyone. You are discerning and know innovation and beauty when you see it, and that's why our furniture caught your eye, and why you're on our site. Fresh City Life is teaming up with the crafty cats at Fancy Tiger to host Brini Maxwell's Crafts for the Masses: Tassel and Pom-Pom-athon, a workshop on making tassels and pom-poms and “implementing tassels and pom-poms in your décor and fashion.”

Ms. Maxwell will be demonstrating many techniques for tassel and pom-pom making. This four hour class includes all materials for only $25! This workshop is not to be missed as it will be sure to include sweet crafting action mixed with kitschy fun times. Check out these highlights from Brini's TV show!

Brini Maxwell Bio

Described as part Doris Day, part Mary Tyler Moore, Maxwell makes kitsch feel classy through her unparalleled personal flair for home design, entertaining and savvy household tips. Inspired by a divine thrift shop purchase of 1950s nesting bowls, she first began sharing her vintage/classic know-how with other Manhattanites in 1998 through her self-titled cable access television show. With an emphasis on uncompromising fabulousness, Brini quickly garnered a devoted fan base and established herself as the go-to-girl on vintage fashion and mid-century modern treasures. After five years on the local airwaves, her show was picked up nationally by the Style Network. The subsequent series has been called a delightful success and has attracted a diverse audience thorough its national platform.

In addition to her television show, Ms. Maxwell has also shared her wealth of knowledge and love of all things of the late '50s, '60s, and early '70s in numerous media interviews, which have included CNN, MSNBC, ABC World News Now, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, E! Entertainment Television, and The Learning Channel. She participated in the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum's panel on Authenticity in Design, was a presenter at the Lambda Literary and James Beard Awards. In 2005 she released her first book, Brini Maxwell's Guide to Gracious Living. Since then, she has had a very successful series of podcasts in conjunction with NPR, and a successful series of vidcasts of material from her original cable access show as well as new video content, which can be found at brinimaxwell.com. She is currently writing a column for craftzine.com and blogging tri-weekly.

In 2007, Brini launched Felix Populi with a line of pillows, and in 2008 has expanded into tabletop and kitchen items including napkins, tea towels and aprons.

Brini continues to reside with her creator Ben Sander in their charming Chelsea apartment, which once served as the studio and set for the famed cable access show.
